Every single person who does a presentation to an audience feels some level of fear. For some people, it is overwhelming. But seasoned presenters learn how to overcome this factor and be really engaging and compelling. How do they do that? These three critical steps are guaranteed to help you overcome your fear.

1. Have Faith in Your Point of View: You need to step back for a moment and release your Imposter Syndrome tendencies. Chances are, you’re pretty darn good at your job, and now is the time to believe in yourself. Remember, taking chances is the only way you get ahead, and believing in yourself allows you to do just that. Don’t give into the fear.

2. Focus on Compelling Content and Scripting: Fear can create a negative psychological tendency toward procrastination. This tendency creates a cycle of behavior that undermines our ability to move past it. You need to consciously fight this by taking action. Focus on what you want to say. Develop a compelling articulation. Create a short and effective storyline that becomes both internalized and easy to remember.

3. Take the Time to Rehearse Effectively: Rehearsing is an art that, once learned, is truly invaluable. Science shows that rehearsing strengthens neural pathways, making your actions more automatic and precise. I help people in my workshops understand how to rehearse using internalized scripts organized around a simple flow of keywords to deliver effectively. They don’t have to stand in front of a mirror trying to say the same things over and over again for hours. They learn how to speak WITH the audience, not AT them.

By going through these three easy steps, you can overcome your fear of public speaking, learn to be comfortable with presenting in front of others, and you will find a voice that will serve you well personally and professionally.
